Two bombs went off shortly after the plane left Barbados in 1976, and all 73 people aboard were killed. Twenty-four of them were Cuba's junior fencing team, flying home from the Central American and Caribbean championships, most of them still teenagers, their medals packed in their bags. They had won every gold in their event. I don't have anything to add to that.
The youngest aboard were schoolchildren, travelling with their coaches, the way teams do. Seventy-three names, and the coaches among them.
The aircraft was a Douglas DC-8, only a few minutes out of Seawell on Barbados when the crew radioed that there had been an explosion on board and asked to turn back. They were still trying to reach the runway. Eleven of those aboard were Guyanese, several of them students on their way to study in Havana.
