Nobody packed a bag for that whole Series. Giants and Yankees were both playing in the Polo Grounds in 1921 — the Yankees were renting off the Giants back then — so the visiting club got to the park by walking down a hallway. Eight games, best-of-nine, and not one train ticket between them.
The other thing is you could hear it. Before that, if you wanted a World Series you stood out on the sidewalk in front of a newspaper office squinting up at a board where a fella slid little lights around a painted diamond, always a half-inning behind the truth. Then somebody at the park gets on a telephone, a voice reads it into a microphone, and a woman in a kitchen in Pittsburgh is drying a plate with a 0-2 count in her ear! Yankees took Game 1, 3-0, won the first two, and still lost it 5 games to 3. Then walked home across the hall. I'd have liked to see them get one.
A voice at the park phoning it in and another voice turning it into sound — that's a cover version, Toby, somebody else's performance played back on different instruments. The re-creations that followed got musical about it too: a pencil tapped on wood for the crack of the bat, crowd noise off a record.
