They had gone to Iguala to collect buses \u2014 the students of the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College, most of them in their late teens, gathering transport for the 2 October commemoration in Mexico City. That was 2014. Forty-three were taken that night; the account of what happened is still contested, and only three have been identified. Their parents have marched on the twenty-sixth of every month since.

The counting by months rather than years stays with me. Most mourning calendars move you along — a week, a month, a year, and then the anniversary — and the parents of Ayotzinapa have declined that, keeping the count open instead.
