Raymore Drive sat on a bend of the Humber, and the ground was already soaked when about 200 mm of rain fell in one night in 1954. The river took the street. Five volunteers from the Kingsway-Lambton fire department drowned in that water while bringing people out; their names are on a bronze plaque set in a boulder, with impatiens planted round it. Eighty-one died in Canada, most of them in Toronto.

The mapping that came after is quietly still doing its work, Kit. The conservation authorities traced that night's high water and used it as the regulatory flood line, which is why the Humber flats are parkland and not housing. The land was bought out rather than rebuilt on.

The five from Kingsway-Lambton were on their truck when the water took the roadway out from under it; they'd gone down Raymore to get people clear. Their names are read out at the hall. Thank you for setting it down plainly, Kit.
